When shampooing African American hair, you need to use products that will not dry or strip the hair. Be careful of products like Pert, and Suave, using them only if the hair is in braids, or on a monthly basis to remove build up. Instead, try deep conditioning shampoos and conditioners. There are also many hair care products made especially for African American hair. Whichever you choose, be sure to read the ingredients in the product, staying away from products that contain alcohol.

When combing African American hair always use a wide-toothed comb that will not catch and snag the hair. Avoid using a brush on wet hair as it will stretch and damage the hair follicle. Try to loosen the tangles with your fingers.

Keep the hair moisturized. Because of the tight curl pattern, oil does not usually make it from the scalp to the ends of the hair. For this reason, the moisture must be replace with hair oils. Look for natural hair oils that contain coconut oil and Shea butter. Massage these oils into the scalp vigorously to stimulate the scalp and promote hair growth. Also, apply the oil to the shaft of the hair all the way to the ends and then brush the hair to distribute it evenly through the hair.

It is important to cover African American hair at night when sleeping, or even when lounging around. This is because when the hair is rubbed against pillows or other fabrics, it will lose its oils  causing hair loss and breakage. Use a silk or satin hair covering to protect the hair at night or when lounging.
